Discussion about Popol Vuh - Affenstunde
Rrd
This was Popol Vuh's short-lived electronic phase. OK, I also have to point out Aguirre was also recorded during this phase, but released sometime after. Florian Fricke's use of the Moog was short-lived before he turned to religion and the piano (and ditching electronics). Affenstunde was their debut, and, not one bit to my surprise, was a very experimental electronic album with lots of spacy electronic effects, plus some ethnic percussion. There's a few droning synth passage that makes me think of Galactic Explorers' Epitaph For Venus (a release so rare and obscure many people believe it to be a 1990s UK fake when it was reissued on CD on the Psi-Fi label, but Galactic Explorers did feature Reinhard Karwatsky who was also with Dzyan, although obscure, is still much better known). The back cover shows Bettina Fricke (I presume is Florian's wife, I do know she's a photographer) playing percussion looking like some hippie who escaped the Haight-Ashbury (of course she didn't as she's German). Apparently she actually played in the group but not credited. Fans of their post-1972 works (Hosianna Mantra onwards) might have a hard time with Affenstunde with the spacy electronic approach that often dispenses with traditional song structure and form (Tangerine Dream were doing a similar approach around the same time, but with different results). I still enjoy this stuff, great to recommend for fans of more experimental electronic music.
