Notes

"Thunder of Spring Over Distant Mountains" is the first portion of a trilogy of compositions exploring musical acculturation. Originally composed as a quadratic tape piece in the Yale Electronic Music Studio, which Robert Morris directed from 1972-1977, "Thunder" is presented here for the first time in a stereo mixdown on compact disk. Seven pieces of Southeast and East Asian music, taken as source material for the work, are subjected to varying degrees of electronic modification.

Actually quite interesting. I like both the ethnographic source material and the ingenious ways the composer has electronically modified it. There's a lot of variety here, and it's not repetitive. Some of the sounds should be familiar to anyone who's played early video games, although of course, as this is from 1973, this long preceded them. The abruptness of some of the transitions makes it seem like the world is a simulated reality, and the settings are being abruptly changed on my watch...
