Discussion about The Guess Who - Artificial Paradise
Granigrinn
Recorded in Los Angeles late 1972, released spring 1973. The two singles from the album, Orly and Follow Your Daughter Home did not reach the Billboard top 40 in the US, though they did climb the charts in Canada. The band had a grueling touring schedule through 1972 which resulted in Greg Leskiw quitting, probably because of conflicts with Cummings (replaced by Don McDougall) and bassist Jim Kale quitting due to exhaustion (replaced by Bill Wallace). Personnel: Burton Cummings (vocals, piano, flute), Gary Peterson (drums, percussion, vocals), Kurt Winter (lead guitar), Donnie McDougall (Guitar, vocals), Bill Wallace (bass, euphonium, vocals). Guest musician: Stanley Winistock (fiddle). Cummings penned several tunes. Several others were originally from the band Brother, of which Kurt Winter and Bill Wallace were founding members. The sessions were produced by Jack Richardson and the lead recording engineer was Brian Christian. Song styles range from prairie barn-burners such as "Orly" to introspective pop-psychedelia "Lost and Found Town" high energy rock "Bye Bye Babe" hard stoner jamming "All Hashed Out" and even a calypso song with risque lyrics: "Follow Your Daughter Home." Package features artwork parodying the Home Publisher Sweepstakes mass mailings and consists of a manilla mailer jacket, a full color LP flat, a full color insert and a folded introductory letter which had the song lyrics printed on the back. The vinyl is the thin flimsy "Dynaflex" record technology that RCA was peddling in an attempt to skimp on production costs. Sold less than 200,000 copies and went out of print. Was remastered and reissued on CD in the early 2000s.
